Cheers erupted Saturday as a Confederate statue that towered for nearly a century over downtown Charlottesville was carted away by truck from the Virginia city where it had become a flashpoint for racist protests and deadly violence.
It was a day of palpable joy and immense relief for scores of residents and visitors who lined neighboring streets to watch the larger-than-life figure of Gen. Robert E. Lee as it was hoisted from its pedestal and taken — at least for now — to storage.
The statue’s removal came more than five years after racial justice activists had renewed a push to take down the monument, an initiative that drew the attention of white supremacists and other racist groups, culminating in the violent “Unite the Right” rally in 2017.
“I’m ecstatic that we’re here now. It’s sad that it’s taken so much to get us to this point. But this is an incredible day,” said Don Gathers, a local Black activist who long advocated for the statue’s removal.
This crazy stuff never stops until all history is rewritten to be the woke and Dems get everything they want. History is history and everyone can like it all or none but you can’t rewrite it from records and what our ancestors and those that have lived it learned in the public school system and from our parents. What if we started wanting all reference to Martin Luther King taken down, and to every black American hero taken down and removed all memory of the Jewish history of the haulacaust, World War I & II., the Korean War and Vietnam . This needs to stop you are making America look foolish through out the world no other nation is doing this. BLM and the Dems are taking away our freedom and making this no longer a free country but a dictatorship.
So good to see this and now know that everything is going to be fine and there will be peaceful harmony in the nation because of this action!
No more crying Discrimination, or unfair treatment in this country towards the blackman.
Every young black man will be happy now and not turn to crime to earn a living.
All of the “Baby-Momma’s” will no longer be husband-less.
Black neighborhoods will be cleaned up and their pride will show through in their fixed up places.
If only America had known sooner that all it took was to remove statues and rename some buildings and all would be right here in this country.

A sad day indeed to see a band playing while nut jobs clap for the destruction of this statue. Who is this Jim Crow turd we speak of, where is Jimmy’s statue? I’m starting to believe this is a racist country when you have bad actors like this destroying history that has stood there before we were born.
They have it all wrong. Visible or Not this just imbues the Icons with more power. The Ancient world was full of defaced and plundered monuments and it only added to their mystic. People don’t forget that easy and forbidden things always generate more interest than just letting them be and fade away.
People ignorant of History are Condemned to Repeat it. Look at Germany they Banned everything to do with Nazi’s and they have more now then they know what to do with. Had they just left it alone it would just be an OLD thing that didn’t work and no one would be bothered with it. Mixed emotions: I’m a history buff and like it or not the statue and others like it reflect that fact. I think placing some informative signage would have been a better response since it could inform why the monument was there and why it could be viewed as problematic. The reader could draw their own conclusions or do more research.
All that said, statues of Confederates carry another burden since the fought against the Union. The informational signage might pass muster but a tougher call.
The mob mentality seeking to remove and destroy statues and monuments is just laziness on the part of those working themselves into a froth. None of those in bronze or stone have actually injured mob members of today. But it takes some actual work to educate oneself first, and then to share with others why Lee, or Columbus, or Teddy Roosevelt was in error back then as viewed through 2021 eyes. Far easier to extend cancel culture to inanimate objects.
Wouldn’t hurt if more politicians and elected officials had just a smidge of backbone.
