Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis Remarks On The Passing Of Former Sheriff Hunter Nelms

PUBLISHERS NOTES: While Mike Lewis is in fact referencing me and Salisbury News for exposing this story, he is absolutely wrong. I did in fact get permission from Hunter’s Family to publish the information on his passing.
Good evening! Based on a number of posts trending on FB tonight, I felt compelled to shed some light on the recent passing of retired Wicomico County Sheriff R. “Hunter” Nelms, a beloved Sheriff by the citizens of Wicomico County, an incredible leader and visionary in local law enforcement, and the man who created a solid foundation on which to build.
I learned of Sheriff Nelms’ passing several weeks ago by a local pastor. I was told that the Sheriff’s family had respectfully requested privacy in the matter, not wanting any special recognition of his passing. Chief Deputy Gary Baker and I confirmed this with a member of the Sheriff’s family within hours. We confirmed that they wanted nothing on social media or with our local media outlets regarding Hunter’s death. We expressed our disappointment in this decision, while reassuring them that we would honor their request. That has now changed.
Due to social media postings, I have received a number of text messages and emails tonight from individuals wanting to confirm Hunter’s death. I fault no one for your FB expressions of love and concern for Sheriff Nelms and his family after learning of his passing.
However, I thought it would be prudent to share the following:
While serving as Chief of the Delmar Police Department in 1984, Hunter Nelms was appointed Sheriff of Wicomico County by Governor Harry Hughes after then Sheriff John Walt Baker fell ill and died in office. After completing the remaining two years of Baker’s term, Sheriff Nelms was elected Sheriff of Wicomico County where he served for five consecutive four-year terms, making him the longest serving Sheriff ever in Wicomico County history.
Under Hunter’s leadership, the role of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office began to rapidly evolve and Sheriff Nelms insisted that deputies be better trained, better equipped, as they were being tasked with handling the many complexities associated with modern day policing. Hunter was instrumental in the creation of and success of the Wicomico County Narcotics Task Force. He accomplished so much during his 5.2 terms as Sheriff of Wicomico County.
We owe Sheriff Hunter Nelms a debt of gratitude for where we are today as an agency. You have provided us with a strong and sturdy foundation on which to build sir, and I am forever grateful.
On behalf of the men and women of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, we express our deepest condolences and ask God’s continued blessing upon the Nelms family.
Rest In Peace Sir!!!
