Senate could expand LGBTQ protections with Equality Act

The Supreme Court handed down its landmark ruling legalizing same-sex marriage six years ago this June, a decision that was especially resonant because it occurred during Pride month. This month, the Senate may have the chance to pass civil rights legislation with similar significance for LGBTQ Americans, if it isn’t stymied by Republican opposition.

Twenty-nine states do not have laws that explicitly shield LGBTQ Americans from discrimination, resulting in a patchwork of protections that vary from state to state. The Equality Act would extend protections to cover federally funded programs, employment, housing, loan applications, education and public accommodations.

The Equality Act first passed the House in 2019 but wasn’t considered by the then-Republican controlled Senate and faced opposition from the Trump administration. It’s still uncertain whether the bill will be able to garner support from a sufficient number of Republicans to pass.

  1. Affirmative action, equality act, etc., etc. why not a normal act? Where God fearing, law abiding normal citizens are not frowned upon for carrying on with their bad self , the way they were born and raised. The whole country has gone nuckin’ fut’s.

  2. Can I obtain equal status because my left leg is 1 millimeter longer than my right? I mean, rules/laws are being done for everything else.

    Geez.

  3. It’s assimilation. I don’t wonder or care what kind of love or sex people are having. My neighbors are each over 400lbs and have 4 kids. I don’t imagine what their sexual habits are and don’t want to. The are clean keep their property up kept and gay straight or otherwise if people are responsible citizens I do not find them threatening or in anyway my business. I have my own life to live and it’s not defined or threatened by ” Others”. It’s always been that way. People use to just mind their own business. If you feel threatened or these life styles are shoved down your throat maybe your over a over mediated busy body and should get back to your own life. They are not coming or gunning for you.
