A public policy group is urging the city to establish an independent audit board as Baltimore is set to receive $640 million in federal funds to spend on Covid-related relief efforts. It’s a push that comes for a city that has a history of money mismanagement that’s been well documented.
Eligible uses of that money include small business assistance.
Linda Leventis says her family owned Sobo Cafe in Federal Hill was hit hard financially by the pandemic and they intend to apply for relief funds.
The Maryland Public Policy Institute, a think tank in Rockville, is urging the city to create an outside, independent audit board to monitor who gets the money and how the funds will be used.
“At the end of the day, this is taxpayers money that we are investing in the city and we need to make sure that these investments are made properly,” said Christopher Summers of the Maryland Public Policy Institute.
“Hundreds of millions of dollars coming in the city there is the temptation by politicians to spend this money on pet projects on things that aren’t really going to help the citizens of Baltimore. That’s why this board needs to be independent,” said Williams.
That cash can certainly buy a lot of new, cheery books by Mosby, the mayor, council president and other elected career criminals! Charming!!
I’m tired of my tax dollars being thrown away on a city that’s not safe to visit…
Where will those honest, non-partisan citizens be found in Baltimore?
It would be better spent if they just flush it down the toilet.
