The Democratic Congressional delegation from Maryland and several Maryland senators are calling on Gov. Larry Hogan (R) to reverse his decision to end the extra federal unemployment benefits by July 3.
Hogan made the announcement Tuesday, saying it would give workers a reason to go back to work. He also says Maryland will reinstate the work-search requirement as a caveat to receiving benefits.
Ending the additional federal benefit would subtract $300 per week that unemployment claimants have been getting for months.
In a letter to Hogan signed by Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson (D) and Senate Chair Katherine Klausmeier (D), the lawmakers wrote, “We know you understand the impossible position your decision puts tens of thousands of Marylanders in and the unimaginable choices it will force them to make.”
Maryland’s nine Democratic senators and representatives in Congress said in a statement, “We urge the governor to reconsider this decision, which will cost our state money in the long run – and wastes federal resources we fought hard to secure. Marylanders are anxious to get back to work, but this pandemic is not over and many unemployed Marylanders are still suffering.”

The maximum amount for unemployment is/was 400 a week. It is based on their pay, I think it used to be 80 percent of your pay is the amount you get for unemployment but the max is 400 a week. On top of that 400 the federal government was giving them an additional 300 dollars a week. That is 700 dollars a week they were getting and not having to do a damn thing. They didn’t have to search for work or even pretend they were. They didn’t have to pay their rent because landlords were not allowed to evict people. So for the last year they have been getting paid more than when they were working and didn’t even have to pay rent. Now it’s all coming to an end and they are freaking out. They were getting extra money but they wasted it. Now they have to figure out how to pay all that back rent and also find a job. There are jobs out there but they don’t want to work. I guess it was nice for them to sit home and collect 3k a month and didn’t have to do a thing.

at 21 / hour you were making 840 a week and most likely had healthcare

I’d like to clear some things up. Unemployment benefits are limited to 26 weeks. To get additional weeks, you must work/earn additional quarters. Obviously, the people still out of work aren’t getting a dime from Maryland or Governor Hogan. The benefit money being discussed here is only a portion of the Federally funded Trillion dollar aid that Pelosi pushed for. Delaware residents who work(ed) for Maryand employers are managed by that state’s departments because those employers pay unemployment taxes to Maryland. At this point, Delaware residents are at the mercy of Maryland government even though Delaware government doesn’t agree that their economy has improved as much as Maryland, those. employers (including Ocean City) hasn’t recalled all of their employees back to work. Let Maryland transition benefit payment responsibility to Delaware not simply tell those affected people that they don’t want the responsibility anymore.
