Councilmembers Zeke Cohen, Kristerfer Burnett, Odette Ramos, Ryan Dorsey, and advocates from the Baltimore Teachers Union, Organizing Black, and CASA de Maryland will gather at city hall to address the importance of more strictly regulating facial recognition technology.

“We, as legislators, have a duty to pass forward-thinking policy and legislation that protects our citizens, our constituents from intrusion harm, ”said Councilmember Burnett, the lead sponsor of the bill. “Until we fully research the full impact that facial recognition technology can have on our communities, we must take responsible action and press the “pause button” on its use in Baltimore City. We’ve seen the impact that misidentification and technological bias has had on people across the country and we must act now to prevent potential harm to our residents.”

This comes as Councilmember Burnett’s bill placing a moratorium on the use of certain facial surveillance technology in Baltimore City passed through the Public Safety and Government Operations committee. Sponsors of the bill cite a lack of research that facial recognition seriously reduces crime, and multiple reports of false identification causing people of color to be arrested.

  1. Is the concern about lawbreakers being caught or wrongly accused. I wonder how many of these Councilmembers use a smart phone with facial recognition? Besides, there are many that feel that the people they want to protect all look alike anyway so where is the concern?

  2. Another boat load of crap , all about people of color , where are your stats or proof?
Try getting the stats on black crime in your city , They set another record last week , black on black and black on whites . Baltimore should be the next nuclear test site , problem solved.
