“They going to show up and kick me out”: Millions face eviction when moratorium ends

Families across the U.S. don’t know if they’re going to have a place to stay as states challenge the federal moratorium on evictions imposed during the pandemic. The trickle of evictions could soon become a flood as renters owe $53 billion to landlords.

Anthony Upshaw and his 17-year-old son are among those being evicted after Upshaw lost this job early in the pandemic and has been struggling since. Constables placed his belongings in the front yard of the Dallas property.

“They going to show up and kick me out. My kid is up here doing his school work. There’s like three weeks of school left before the kids graduate,” Upshaw said.

The Texas Supreme Court lifted the moratorium on evictions on March 31. The Dallas-Fort Worth area has the third-most eviction filings in the country.

“They are going to put everyone out the first chance they got,” Upshaw said, adding that he doesn’t know where he and his son will go. “We haven’t figured that part of it out yet.”

“My goal was just to make it to the end of the school year and then in the summer, we can make plans and try to reassess the national situation, getting vaccinated and then make adjustments to our lives from there. But the moratorium was supposed to protect everybody until the end of June,” he said.

This could be the beginning of an expected tsunami of evictions as the nationwide moratorium is lifted on June 30. Up the 40 million Americans are at risk of losing their homes, according to the Aspen Institute.

On average, Black renters are twice as likely as White renters to face evictions, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

  1. Relying on handouts will only be a viable solution until the handouts end.

Should have been out looking for a job to show the landlord that you are trying.

There are others that will be able to pay on a regular basis – if you can’t make up the back-rent it’s a business decision!

If you have a blingmobile in the front yard – better sell-it quick…or be ready to live in it – even if it’s the Baby-Daddy’s!

  2. I recommend a Mr. Upshaw go get him self one of those jobs that employers are trying so hard and desperately to fill!

  3. Great move on the DEMOCRATS part “HOUSE ILLEGALS” at tax payers expense and make AMERICANS HOMELESS.

  4. Another problem the government caused. If these people were receiving unemployment then there is no reason why their bills shouldn’t have been paid. The government told them they didn’t have to pay their rent during the pandemic so they didn’t. They bought other things with the money the government gave them. Now it’s time to pay the piper and they don’t have money. I don’t feel a bit sorry for them! Who I do feel sorry for are the landlords that have had to continue to make mortgage/loan payments on these homes along with the upkeep of the buildings/homes all while not getting paid rent from the renter.

  5. Does anyone care that the people that rented the property to the tenant have bills to pay too?? Like maybe the mortgage on that rental?

  6. It is only deadbeat Black people bitching, most others went and made arrangements with the landlords to repay and catch up. I have 2 buildings I rent apartments in, and not one of the Black families has contacted me about repaying or even if they can help around the place.
My Latino families, 6 of them, have all called and two men are repainting a couple of apartments for me for rent. One woman is Baby-sitting for my wife so she can get back to work. I got another Latino redoing some plumbing in a building. One of the teens is doing the mowing around the places.
They really do have a damn good work ethic, they want to be good Americans and work for a living instead of crying about “Slavery” and give me freebies!
