Former U.S. Education Secretary Runs for Maryland Governor

Former U.S. Education Secretary John King says he’s running for governor of Maryland.

King, who was education secretary in former President Barack Obama’s administration, announced on social media Tuesday he is seeking the Democratic nomination in a field of growing candidates in the wide-open 2022  governor’s race to succeed Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, who is term-limited.

King is the second high-profile Democrat to formally launch a bid for governor. Comptroller Peter Franchot (D) launched his campaign last year.

King says as governor he would focus on education, climate change and addressing systemic inequality.

John B. King Jr., who served as President Barack Obama’s education secretary, said he would focus on racial inequity as Maryland’s governor. This is his first campaign for elected office. (Jacquelyn Martin/AP)

  1. Focus on education? Baltimore is already churning out 1.31 gpa students. It doesn’t need more focus. It needs fixing. What would he do that Hogan has not for 8 years?

  2. What an ill prepared idiot for the job, I’m thankful I no longer have children in public schools, they reward the violent students and punish the gifted it’s not longer a place for education

  3. if he remotely had anything to do with moochelle’s lunch program, he lost my vote.
    common core?
run as fast as you can from this one.

  4. SecEd for less than a year under Obama, a lawyer and qualified as a high school teacher. Same PC Liberal platform. Has hipster facial hair. That’s it?

  5. No, he’s also a Democrat running in a red state, along with the black thing.
I smell millions more poured into Baltimore schools, teachers’ union mutual genuflection, critical race theory, more blame on all who came before, and,
    of course, higher taxes.
