Albert Einstein’s Messy Desk Highlights The Surprising Link Between Clutter And Intelligence

A famous photo taken in Princeton, New Jersey in 1955 depicts Albert Einstein’s office the day he passed away. One would imagine a thinker of such superior intellect would have the finest productivity tricks and systems to keep his brilliant brain as clutter-free as possible. Did he have a standing desk? Were his books alphabetized for easy reference? Did he use a fancy goal-setting journal?

As it turns out, the answer to all of those questions is no. Einstein’s desk was about as messy as it gets, the kind of setup you would expect from an editorial cartoon depicting office workers in impossible paper-pushing jobs.

Einstein isn’t the only big thinker to flourish in disorder. Mark Twain, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg are just a few other documented examples of creatives who kept their desks in a state of organized chaos.

So does being messy actually lead to better creativity? Or does it depend on your personality? Here’s what science has to say.

In this series of experiments, participants were seated at a desk that was either clean or messy, then asked to answer survey questions and make various decisions. Participants seated at a messy desk generated more creative ideas during a brainstorming exercise. They also chose new or novel products over established ones when presented with options.

The bottom line…Your work environment doesn’t have to be perfect; it simply has to work for you and free your mind. Let yourself get messy, cultivate creativity, and your next wild idea might be the one that helps you go the distance.

  1. It’s more like a link between clutter, and laziness. Highly intelligent people tend to be lazy at domestics.

  2. Geniuses have abnormalities in their brains where as some regions allow for faster deeper thought other are smaller or absent entirely making them quirky.
In 1999, further analysis by a team at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario revealed that Einstein’s parietal operculum region in the inferior frontal gyrus in the frontal lobe of the brain was vacant. Also absent was part of a bordering region called the lateral sulcus (Sylvian fissure). Researchers at McMaster University speculated that the vacancy may have enabled neurons in this part of his brain to communicate better. “This unusual brain anatomy…[missing part of the Sylvian fissure]… may explain why Einstein thought the way he did,” said Professor Sandra Witelson who led the research published in The Lancet. This study was based on photographs of the whole brain made at autopsy in 1955 by Harvey and not a direct examination of the brain. Einstein himself claimed that he thought visually rather than verbally.

  3. Geniuses like Einstein and Tesla both claimed to be able to see their thoughts visually, Tesla went so far as to say he thought none of his ideas were actually his but transmitted to his brain from somewhere else like God

  4. Salisbury Mayor Jake Day is a racist and is named in a lawsuit against a black man, a black National Guard soldier! Why wasn’t this disclosed while Jake Day was running for Mayor or running for re-election? Jake Day knew this and failed to disclose it himself. Jake Day is a typical racist Democrat who hates women and black people but uses them for their votes!

Why has this been hidden for the last 5 years? Ironically the corrupt Maryland National Guard and the Army recently promoted Jake Day to Major while this was going on. Proves the Guard and the Army is corrupt and racist!

Now what does Governor Hogan have to say about this? I can’t believe that he didn’t know!

Now what does Gubernatorial candidate Comptroler Peter Franchot have to say about this? Is Jake Day still going to be your running mate for Lt. Governor?

Now what does Mary Beth Carozza, Carl Anderton, Mike Lewis and Jamie Dykes have to say about this? They endorsed his campaign along with Gov. Hogan.

What does former County Council President John Cannon have to say about this? Cannon endorsed his campaign!

What does former Wicomico County Republican Central Committee President Mark McIver, current President Nate Sansom, current Central Committee Members Wendy Arnspacher, Linda Luffman and John Palmer have to say about this? They endorsed his campaign!

They are all just as racist for endorsing Jake Day!

Jake Day you need to resign as Mayor! You also need to resign your military commission!

Racism in the US – and its military

The report points to two instructors for their treatment of Weaver: Sgt. 1st Class Andrew Carbaugh and Capt. Jacob Day.

Day declined to comment on the advice of military lawyers.

A 2017 memo from the Maryland National Guard concedes that the chain had racist overtones and would no longer be used.

“With regards to the chain: In 2017, the governor’s office was advised by the Guard that the matter was fully investigated and that the practice was discontinued,” Ricci said. “No one, soldier or otherwise, should feel harassed or discriminated against.”
