Maryland teen Peyton Ham fatally shot by state trooper was honors student

A 16-year-old Maryland resident who was fatally shot by a state trooper while armed with a toy gun and knife was a “sweet young man” and honors student, relatives said.

Peyton Alexander Ham, who attended Leonardtown High School, was remembered as a “talented” honors student with promise Wednesday in the wake of the shooting.

His family said he was “an incredibly smart, gifted sweet young man” with an “Alex P. Keaton” type personality, referring to the overachieving TV character played by Michael J. Fox on “Family Ties.”

“Our family is absolutely heart broken and shattered over this sudden, unexpected loss of life of a talented young man, filled with promise,” his family said in a statement. “Words cannot express the gratitude our family is feeling with the overwhelming love and support being extended by our friends and family in our amazing community.”

Ham’s mother, Kristee Boyle, described the teen as “an awesome young man.”

“It’s a horrific situation,” Boyle said.

  1. Well, if you point a replica BB gun at a cop, you give them no choice. Sorry that this happened, but what ever happened to owning consequences. Seems like every time a kid makes a dumb mistake and pays for it with his life (because instead of following police orders ) they end up dead and then all of a sudden they were all choir boys.

  2. Police report said he was shot when he raised the gun at the police. After being shot he went after them with the knife. Seems he didn’t learn the first time he was shot to stay down.

  3. The new protocol should be that the suspect shoots first then the police can respond using deadly force. This way there is no question the suspect has a real gun. Simple!
