Bodycam footage of police shooting of Daunte Wright released

The black man who was killed during a traffic stop in Minnesota was fatally shot by a cop who mistook her gun for a Taser, police said Monday, as they released bodycam footage of the incident, showing the officer screaming, “Taser! Taser!”

Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said Daunte Wright died as a result of “an accidental discharge” by the officer, who has been placed on administrative leave.

Police bodycam footage shows the officer yelling “Taser! Taser!” as others struggled with Wright in his car.

The video shows Wright stepping out of his car, then leaping back behind the wheel and driving off.

“Oh s–t,” the officer is heard saying on the video. “I just shot him!”

The officer was not immediately identified but Gannon described her as a “very senior” member of the force — whose job may now be on the line.

  1. Horrible accident, but once again resisting arrest where a taser needs to be deployed. Maybe the right idea is just to submit and let your attorney settle it later

  2. This video clearly shows “Suicide by cop” , you fight and drive off you are asking for a bullet, how stupid.

  3. UNFORTUNATE! Clearly this was an accidental shooting, but now a 25 year veteran officer, mother of two, will be going to jail for her mistake. This is not the first time something like this has happened and will surely not be the last. Tasers are often yellow in color and worn on the non-dominant hand side of an officer’s gun belt. In the
“heat of battle” the officer drew the wrong weapon. The media is trying to say this is similar to the Floyd case.
They are correct in that it happened in the same area and they involve uncooperative and resisting suspects.
While the officer clearly is wrong in this instance, it would have never happened had the suspect cooperated with police. Moral of the story: cooperate with authority!

  4. When you are given authority to KILL, you BETTER be right.

26 years as a cop and she PULLED THE WRONG WEAPON — by “accident” — and shot someone??

Three cops against one guy with no weapon — but wait! , he had expired tags!! and an outstanding MISDEMEANOR warrant!! – and she killed him “by mistake”. She should go to prison for that.

The police put “We, the people” in PRISON for shooting a burglar ransacking their house WITH A WEAPON in his hand. Gleefully, too. To make sure we understand who the REAL boss is, huh?
THEY kill unarmed “we, the people” by accident (!!) and claim it’s “justified”???

If YOUR son is killed in a robbery, well, there’s going to be a report taken. Maybe a detective will ask around a little bit. Interview some neighbors…..
Kill a cop? THOUSANDS of other cops will search mountains and fields in freezing cold, search any house they choose (without any warrant, too, and beat whomever might be stupid enough to hinder them in any way at all) to apprehend that guy.
Traveling with cash? Don’t get pulled over, because a man with a badge and a gun has (and uses, to the tune of over a BILLION dollars last year!!!! read that again) the legal right to TAKE THAT MONEY without trial or charges.
Highway robbery is all that is, under the guise of “protecting” us.
    Killing someone by “accident”? whaaaaaat???

    TWO SETS OF LAWS.

    Keep cheering.

  5. Submit?

    OR DIE???

    That’s your logic???
THAT was the reasoning the British used against us, too. See what happened to THEM?
The Germans used that reasoning TWICE. See what happened to them?

In a supposedly free nation, that reasoning is weak. At best.

    The wheel continue to turn.
    Entropy rolls on.

Not to any good end, either.

  6. Even though I regret feeling like this, I don’t feel excited about the Floyd (sick of hearing about it) dude or this cat. There is a simple solution that I’ve administered all of my days. That is corporate with the law on the scene and I’m still here. Have these rioters ever given any thought that twice as many White people have been removed by police as black folk? Doubtful, because the likely don’t think before reacting or they would not do stupid things.

  7. Simple solution to this problem:

Don’t drive illegally with expired license plates and don’t resist arrest when you have active warrants.

The P.O.S. got what society deserves!

  8. As far as I am concerned, this was a tragic mistake that would have been avoided if the dirt-bag hadn’t resisted and escaped.

Him getting tasered while he was driving away may still have resulted in his death through a vehicular loss of control accident.

My only sympathy is for the police officer – she has to live with the results…the dirt-bag got what he deserved!

  9. I’m not saying the dead guy didn’t have any fault in the matter.

    What I’m saying is
    1) a 26 year veteran STILL can’t figure out what weapon she is using (and PLEASE don’t start with “excitement of the moment BS – in 26 years, she hasn’t learned to control her emotions?)? and,
    2) even if he gets in his car and drives away, the police don’t know where to find him later??? they SHOT him???!!
    3) the police DO have FAR TOO MUCH leeway and legal forgiveness/protection when they kill someone.

For the record, I absolutely believe the police are necessary and I’m GLAD there are men and women willing to put up with the trash they encounter so often as officers.
In my VERY few encounters with police, I ALWAYS understand they are in control are in charge when they show up and act accordingly — obey their orders and keep a cool head.
HOWEVER, I’ve also seen police go WAAAAAY overboard over something simple and easily handled .
If you question how often that happens, just go to YouTube and look for “police violence”. There are HUNDREDS of video’s of them beating people bloody, slamming people face first into concrete, and of course, shooting people in the back. You won’t believe what you will see.
So, please, also stop with the “just cooperate” BS. You can STILL GET KILLED.

    1. Cooperating if stopped is the universal advice; so is following the instructions given. That’s what you did, and what I’ve done on the really rare occasion. We’re both still here.

The dead man had a track record, it appears, of making a series of bad decisions over time. If he’d renewed his tags with some of the cash he was waving on his FB page he’d still be driving around. If he’d showed for the court date. Etc. The gun/taser mishap was fatal but resisting precipitated the need for something beyond the cuffs, especially since his possession of a gun previously was known.

The cops end up in a Damned if you do; damned if you don’t role. That doesn’t bode well for any of us since they act on our behalf.

  10. Simply Put ..No Young Man Or Women Will Chose Career Into Law Enforcement . Thats Plain And Simple . ….And No One Will Have To Ask Why !
