‘Nothing more than a sanctuary bill’: MD Sheriff opposes efforts to prohibit ties with ICE

Frederick County and Worcester County will soon be the only Maryland jurisdictions still working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“To basically stand down and say, ‘We’re not going to cooperate, We’re not going to collaborate’ — they are effectively allowing criminals to be released,” said Frederick County Sheriff, Chuck Jenkins.

On Tuesday, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced the County will be cutting its ties with federal immigration authorities.

This announcement was made as Maryland’s General Assembly is also considering the ‘Dignity Not Detention Act.’

The legislation would prohibit the State and local jurisdictions from participating in immigration-related detention.

The Frederick County Sheriff says he’s testified on this topic in Annapolis in the past.

“Nothing more than a sanctuary bill to allow Maryland to become a Sanctuary State,” said Jenkins.

On Wednesday, FOX45 News asked Governor Larry Hogan’s office about the Governor’s position on the legislation, if he will sign the legislation if it reaches his desk, and if this law would make Maryland a Sanctuary State.

Hogan’s Director of Communications, Mike Ricci, said via email:

“The administration has not stated a position, and will wait to see how the legislation proceeds in the General Assembly.”
