Hasbro is updating its popular Monopoly board game with modern references, asking fans to vote on which additions should be made to the decades-old game via an online poll.
A press release from the company directs fans to an online survey in which they can vote for new activities being added to the game’s “Community Chest Cards” deck, a random event system that causes players to gain money, lose money or even see their pieces frozen in “jail.”
“The world has changed a lot since Monopoly became a household name more than 85 years ago, and clearly today community is more important than ever,” said Eric Nyman, Hasbro’s chief community officer.
“We felt like 2021 was the perfect time to give fans the opportunity to show the world what community means to them through voting on new Community Chest Cards. We’re really excited to see what new cards get voted in!” Nyman added.
Some of the updated suggestions in the survey included participation or purchases in a school bake sale, for a net gain or loss of in-game money; choosing to not return a wallet, which causes immediate jail time; and running a marathon for a local hospital, which causes the player’s token to advance to the “GO” spot, netting $200 in in-game funds.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
