Maryland Capital Sues Oil, Gas Companies Over Climate Change

Maryland’s capital city has filed a lawsuit against 26 oil and gas companies, saying their industry was taking the environment to a point where fighting climate change would be difficult.
The City of Annapolis filed the lawsuit Monday in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court, and names ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP and Shell among its defendants, the Capital Gazette reported Tuesday. Annapolis says it’s the 25th state or local government to file such a lawsuit.
Mayor Gavin Buckley’s office said in a statement on Tuesday that the city will argue the companies violated the Maryland Consumer Protection Act and other actions, including public and private nuisance and negligence.
“The companies worked to deceive people of the danger, hiding their knowledge and engaging in an intentional campaign to mislead the public about the science, proving the growing danger posed by fossil fuels,” Buckley told a news conference.
Anne Arundel County is also considering similar litigation against oil and gas companies, County Executive Steuart Pittman said Tuesday during his weekly media briefing. Pittman pointed to the county’s 130 miles of coastline, parts of which are also at risk to rising sea levels.

  1. How is the electric going to be produced. These nuts know that MD does not support “windmills” and “solar panels”. They are allowing these companies to form another monopoly over consumers with no plan to regulate them. Who will be covering the cost of startup for these con-artist companies? I will tell you. THE CONSUMER BY HAVING ELECTRIC BILLS TO TRIPLE and QUADRUPLE.

Availability of electricity will be diminished and controlled by the Government. Just another step in the agenda of DICTATORSHIP / COMMUNIST control of our lives.

MD does not support “hydra power” and I don’t understand why, since the science is there in files the NAVY has had since the 1960’s. They want to talk about coast line then let us use the tidal waters to make electricity. MD has a huge coast line with the BAY and OCEAN

Hydra power will be cheaper to start up and maintained. We will never have to worry about the sun shine or wind which are very unpredictable. The tides will always be there as long as the earth rotates.

    1. Actually the rotation of the earth has nothing to do with tides, it’s the gravitational pull of the moon that causes tides as it revolves around our planet. Unfortunately, the tidal range in the mid-Atlantic area is only about 3 feet, not enough to sustain tidal generation of electricity. From Charleston to Jacksonville the range is in the 10 foot range so that might be feasible. The tidal range in Anchorage is also extreme enough but most other places in the United States are just not practical.

  2. You fail to see the real point. It will make LAWYERS rich and cost the electric companies MILLIONS to defend. So, they will give in so the idiot Politicians will get a partial win. One brick at a time they will ruin our world, get rich off it.
