US Postal Service planning to increase rates, slow down 1st Class Mail

USPS is trying to boost revenue after losing billions last year

The U.S. Postal Service is planning to raise postage rates and alter the way it delivers first-class mail as its leaders are looking to boost revenue following a challenging 2020, a report says.

The strategic plan, which Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is expected to unveil soon, comes after the agency lost $9.2 billion last year because of a decline in mail volume sparked by the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Washington Post.

The newspaper reports that USPS is looking to eliminate a tier of first-class mail in which letters, bills and other envelope-sized items can be delivered to local addresses in two days. All first-class correspondence would instead be grouped into a slower, three-to-five-day window, it adds.

  1. Thats always the way to “fix” internal problems. Increase costs. For an organization which does NOT receive a yearly budget from Congress (no folks, Congress does not approve a budget for USPS – but they have bailed them out countless of times with OUR tax money), internal mismanagement seems to always get rewarded.

Congress involvement comes when USPS discusses removal of traditional Saturday delivery – which impacts constituents AND Congress ability to bail USPS out. So USPS cowers each and every time.

21st century, M-F traditional delivery and early outs for those postal workers who continue to dangle along. We have managed via a world sickness, revamping USPS is beyond overdue.

  2. This makes me so very angry. So, those of us who do not wish to put all of our info online are being forced to because if we don’t we incur late charges that are not our fault. So freaking wrong.

  3. How could they get worse than they already are?

Hold my beer! It’ll cost you more, you have to wait in line with 40 people for one agent, and it will take longer to get delivered cuz were gonna skip Saturdays now too!

  4. Price increases and a slow down in service will not boost revenue. It will force more people to pay on line or in person when possible. The result will be larger losses as they never lay anyone off and the benefits keep growing.

  5. Received letter Saturday that looked a bit shopworn. Invite from financial advisor for a fancy restaurant meal while listening to his sales pitch. Return address Easton.

Kicker: The freebie meal was scheduled for December 12, and these invites usually go out several weeks in advance!!

So it may be a challenge for them to actually slow down deliveries.

  6. i agree it should not be called first class. Most of this mail is in white envelopes! and giving it special privileges like first class is the epitome of racism. All the colored mail should be sped up and the white mail should go to the back of the bus!
