Back when life was simple in SBY

On December 3, 1949 Santa Claus arrived in Salisbury atop a 100-foot balloon train to the excitement of nearly 10,000 frigid parents and children. After crossing Division Street travelling east down Main Street (seen here), children lined up to speak with Santa about what they wanted for Christmas on the Wicomico County courthouse lawn.

  1. I don’t know about ‘49, but as a kid in around ‘59 I thought that was the most beautiful place in the world. Every inch of the court house lawn, including the building and trees were lighted and decorated. Saint Nick was in his house waiting to see all. Absolutely great memories.

  2. What a fantastic memory. I was probably one of those kids watching the Christmas parade. Downtown Salisbury was the place to be with RE Powells, Benjamins, Hess and other fine locally owned business where the owners and their employees took pride in their work and they knew your name.
