Wesley athletics to be discontinued at end of the school year

DOVER — Wesley College told its athletics staff this afternoon that the school will be discontinuing its NCAA Division III sports programs at the end of the school year.

The decision comes as the entire college is transitioning to becoming part of Delaware State University, which agreed to take over some aspects of the Dover school last year.

Wesley president Dr. Robert Clark said that the decision was made by Delaware State.

“Wesley College is fully committed to Division III Athletics and looks forward to the opportunities this Spring holds for our student-athletes and Campus community,” Clark said in a statement.  “As far as next year, and post-acquisition of Wesley College, the decision regarding Division III Athletics lies with Delaware State University and questions regarding that decision should be addressed with them.”

Dr. Steve Newton, a DSU spokesperson, said the school is not permitted to comment yet.

“DSU is not allowed by NCAA regulations and policy to comment on the status of Wesley Athletics until the NCAA compliance office confirms that Wesley College has formally notified them of this decision,” he said in an email.

  1. Attended Wesley back in the eighties in the days of Reed Stewart. I was one of the kids that work there way thru school but at the time that school had a lot of rich privileged white kids. We all felt that we were superior to what was going on outside of town at DSU.
Looks like DSU will have the last laugh.
Over a hundred years of history and looks like it will just become an annex of DSU.
