A Viewer Writes: Buccaneers – SB-572 –

How are these two items connected? I haven’t the slightest idea. I was cruising through SBY News and while looking at the article about someone not liking the Tampa Bays football team’s name “Buccaneers”, there was a comment totally unrelated about SB-572. Go figure.
I can see why the writer is upset about Senate Bill 572. This bill is the start of a process that will do exactly what the writer said. Just wait and see. After the bill goes into effect, I believe you will see someone introduce a resolution to provide for a TIF for the Ross Building. And of course the four liberal members on the County Council will approve this on a 4-3 vote. Thus starts the process leading to reducing property tax revenue that would have been going to schools, the Sheriff’s Department and Fire/Ambulance.
Now here is where swampy politics comes into this. (UH OH) did I just imply we have a swamp here in Wicomico County like the one in Washington DC).I’ll be hated forever. But I digress again. So here’s how it works. First. How can a politician keep their promises to their contributors and their constituents at the same time such as in SB-572? In this case it’s easy. By passing this bill they can say that it does no harm at all. And they are right. Then when it hits the walls they can say that it was not SB-572,  it was the County Council, not them, who voted for the TIF. We use to call actions like this “plausible deniability”.
So there it is like it or not. If you don’t like it then contact the delegation that the writer listed in their article. Or, you can just sit on your butts like most people do and whine about it. As always, I’ll sign my name and expect the outlash from the unnamed whiners.

  1. You go John. The authority swamp does not like informed people. There’s Just not enough people to stand up to them to make a difference.

  2. John, you are spot on! The swamp in SBY/Wicomico is deep and wide with many ties to Greater Salisbury Committee. If we can’t conquer the swamp and politicians working only for themselves and their friends, we can’t possibly hope to regain control of our government at state and national levels. Wake up, people! Of course, the problem is that you can call your reps and they won’t give two hoots about what you think. I miss Bob Culver, Terry Cohen, Debbie Campbell, and Tim Spies.

  3. Good comment but wrong number. It’s SB 794, introduced by the “Wicomico Senators”, who are Carozza and Eckardt. There is a companion legislation filed in the House of Delegates the “Wicomico Delegation”, that’s Anderton, Adams, Mauck and Hartman and Sample-Hughes, HB 1179.

The bill in the senate is set for a hearing on February 24 in the Budget and Taxation Committee, and the house version will be heard by the Ways and Means Committee on March 2. You can send comments to them by email. the procedure is set out on the General Assembly website at
