Gov. Larry Hogan ordered 500 Maryland National Guard members to remain in Washington, D.C., through the inauguration and the end of the month.
The governor explained the process that delayed getting members of the Maryland National Guard into the District after supporters of President Donald Trump breached the U.S. Capitol Wednesday afternoon while members of Congress were finalizing the electoral votes in the presidential election.
“The mob may have shattered glass, but they did not — and they will not — shatter our democracy,” Hogan said.
Hogan said D.C. officials submitted a request for law enforcement support, and Maryland mobilized a mobile field force of 200 specially trained Maryland State Police troopers and called up an initial response force of 500 members of the Maryland National Guard.
Hogan said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer — who was bunkered during the attack with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer — called him to ask for Maryland’s help. Hogan said Hoyer told him that the U.S. Capitol Police was overwhelmed, there was no federal law enforcement presence and the leaders of Congress were pleading for assistance from Maryland.
