The nation’s school children were among those watching the violence unfold Wednesday at the nation’s Capitol, which led educators to re-think their lesson plans for Thursday.
Most educators tend to agree the Washington, D.C. disruptions have resulted in a series of teachable moments, which appeared to have been the case in Baltimore County.
“It’s not to tell them our political views, it’s not to make judgements but it’s to create space for our young kids,” said Dundalk Elementary School Principal Michael Parker.
That was the goal for the start of the day from Parker to teachers at Dundalk Elementary School.
“One fifth grader today said, ‘Mr. Parker, I was disappointed. I was disappointed that adults were acting this way because they can’t get something they wanted,’” Parker said.
Baltimore County Schools said it wanted to help students process what they’d seen on television and give teachers the flexibility of making it a part of their lesson plans.
“We were able engage in the conversation. We were able to really inquire about what’s happening and what’s going to happen next,” said Dundalk High School student Chahat Kumari.
My suggestion to start countering this crap is to remind them – over and over and over again if necessary – that they are silent as Antifa takes down statues, sets fire to police cars, riots, loots, and other violent acts of incitement against conservations.
Violence will not be tolerated by anyone, and that means anyone.
