Road Improvements are on the FAST Track in Sussex County, First Project Has Been Approved

Sussex County will be seeing some major improvements to infrastructure.

County Council passed the Funding Accelerating Safety in Transportation, or “FAST,” Track program, partnering with DelDOT to accelerate road improvements in problem areas of the county.

“When a project would be scheduled for 4-5 years, by the county fronting the money, DelDOT will speed the projects up by a number of years, probably close to 3-4 years,” said County Administrator Todd Lawson about the program.

The county is fronting the costs of the projects, but DelDOT will reimburse Sussex as each phase of work is completed.

The first project that was approved for the FAST Track program is the intersection of Hudson, Sweetbriar, and Cave Neck roads in Milton.

The triangle-shaped intersection is rated one of the most dangerous in Sussex County, so County Council wanted improvements made here right away.

DelDOT officials say the project will bring traffic delays, but they will be well worth it.

“There’s going to be delays and headaches that come along with that,” said DelDOT Director of Community Relations C.R. McLeod, “But again, in the long term, we really think this is going to make our entire infrastructure in Sussex County safer and better.”

FAST Track projects must begin 60 days after approval, and DelDOT said the engineering process for the Milton intersection will start in early 2021.
