Hundreds of COVID-19 vaccine doses thrown out after vials were intentionally removed from hospital fridge

A former employee intentionally left 57 vials of the Moderna vaccine out of a pharmacy refrigerator overnight at a Wisconsin hospital that had to be thrown out, according to Advocate Aurora Health.

After an initial internal investigation at Aurora Medical Center-Grafton, it was first believed to be human error.

But then the person in question Wednesday admitted that they intentionally removed the vaccine from refrigeration.

That person is no longer employed there, Advocate Aurora Health said in a news release.

More than 500 doses of the vaccine had to be thrown out. Each vial contained 10 doses.

Some of the vaccine doses were administered to team members on Dec. 26 within the approved 12-hour post-refrigeration window but most had to be discarded because of temperature requirements, Advocate Aurora Health said.
