When you take a more serious and hard look at each bar/restaurant location, each one is unique. Take my bar, (Caribbean Joe’s) for example. When Governor Hogan demands we be at 50%, YOU have no real idea what the state has done.
First of all, my inside capacity is, (believe it or not) 99 seats. Would you agree tat the image above is a fairly good view of how many people I can fit inside? Sure, there’s more seats to the left and right but that’s it. You see, the state/county decided that my side porch, (open air) is a part of my overall dining and trust me, I am not the only bar/restaurant held to the same kind of capacity. So count the heads in the picture and tell me with this alleged pandemic just where I can fit 49 people INSIDE?
OK, now that you clearly see it is impossible, start deducting the seating SIX FEET APART. In all reality, (seriously) I may only be able to fit some 15 people inside at all times. Show me any locally owned bar/restaurant business how they can survive with only 15 customers. My bar/restaurant is not unique to this kind of square footage.
While I understand I am talking about my business. I do so because I’m trying to give you a good example of WHY so many local businesses are closing down. Then add, we must close down by 10 PM to boot. Everyone needs to look at OTHER local businesses and what they are up against. It is truly IMPOSSIBLE to survive and I do mean impossible.
I want you to think about our staff. Bartenders, cooks, servers, etc.. Then I want all of you to think, especially locals, STOP asking for winter discounts! None of us can afford to give away anything at this point. There is no VOLUME. My bar is technically at 20% capacity, if that! With Hogan’s Gestapo Task Force, none of us can afford a $5,000.00 fine and most are closing their doors because they’re afraid of the fines, NOT COVID-19! Bars like mine are simply open to keep our staff employed.
With hospital numbers increasing with patients, (so we’re told) and COVID-19 numbers above 7% on the Shore and state one can only expect Hogan to go back to phase 1 and pretty much shut us down again, unless we want to do carry out. You should know the truth, all of us stayed open to keep our regular customers happy. We did not do so to make money because that would be the biggest joke ever told here on the Shore. Support your local bar/restaurants and go out and enjoy what’s left of phase 2.
Finally, if you think I’m being selfish by exposing such information, trust me, I’m not. I’m the only one with the ability to expose what ALL bar/restaurants are up against at this time. Enjoy your FREEDOM now before Hogan locks everyone up again.
I understand where you’re coming from but what do you expect? They can’t analyze every restaurant on a case by case basis. Now if you were a fortune 500 company or a wall street bank the gov’t would bail you out no problem. Perhaps we should be focused on how the taxes you have paid your entire life should be used to help you during this troubling time. There are more Town transportation employees than there are drivers of the nearly non-existent Transportation Department. On top of that, all these managers are managed by a committee and nobody is interested in fixing anything because their checks go to direct deposit.
This is DEFINITELY not the time to be in the hospitality business. I drove the length of OC today and it’s amazing just how many bars/restaurants are up for sale/lease. You can’t even find a place to buy a soft crab sandwich (I have looked) anymore. Does anyone remember Colonial Beach, VA? When gambling south of us shut down, it became a ghost town and I think that’s what Ocean City has to look forward to.

We sense your frustration Joe. Believe you me, you are not alone. It has been said by many scientists that we should practice increased levels of hygiene, but not curtail normal activities, business, schools, etc.. By not doing so will cause much more harm than the former. I think we can most all agree that the consequences experienced from the virus would be much less devastating than continuing to be subjected to our current situation.

Perhaps a class action lawsuit? The mere fact tat there is zero evidence that bars and restaurants are the root cause of catching COVID, (especially after 10 PM) will certainly help win our cases. Where are the bar and restaurant associations in all of this? Comparing all of the big box stores and there being NO SOCIAL DISTANCING whatsoever in Walmart and so forth. Are we really to believe the LIES we are seeing and experiencing right in front of our faces with so many smarty Americans out there that we are simply to lay down and take it. Over a dozen restaurants in Ocean City alone shut down last summer because staff contracted COVID. You’re delusional if you keep insisting there’s no evidence you can contract COVID at a bar/restaurant.
