Rep. Ilhan Omar’s former husband has described himself as a gay man in a new academic paper, adding fresh weight to long-running claims that their 2009 marriage was an immigration scheme rather than a genuine union.
Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the man Omar married in Minnesota in 2009 and divorced in 2017, referred to himself as a “gay man of the East African diaspora” in a paper on queer violence in Kenya, the New York Post reported.
The self-description lands on a record already thick with questions about who Elmi is to Omar, why they married, and whether federal immigration law was used as a family tool. Investigators have examined those questions before. Omar has denied wrongdoing. The paper does not settle the brother allegation on its own. It does make the old story harder to wave away.
