People can lecture you about “paying your fair share” until the cows come home. Then they sell the house in New York or New Jersey, look at the tax bill, and drive to Delaware.’
That is the story the New York Post laid out Tuesday. Baby Boomers are pouring into the First State’s tiny coastline not because they suddenly discovered patriotism for Joe Biden’s summer neighborhood, but because they can keep more of what they already earned and still walk to the sand.
Low property taxes. No state sales tax. A beach close enough that the kids in Pennsylvania or Long Island can still show up for the weekend. For a generation that spent decades feeding the high-tax machines of the Northeast, that combination is not a lifestyle brand. It is arithmetic.
The Numbers Are Not Subtle
More than 40,000 people have moved into Sussex County since 2020. That is a 17 percent jump, about five times the national growth rate. Delaware’s population of residents 65 and older rose 23 percent over the same stretch, faster than any other state, including the usual retirement magnets.
An earlier Post report and Fox Business both tracked the same migration. Florida is still Florida. It is also more crowded, more expensive, and farther from the grandchildren. Delaware sits a few hours down I-95. You can flee the tax man without vanishing from the family.
