Anti-Jewish Hate Crimes Surge in NYC Under Mamdani

Hate crimes targeting Jewish New Yorkers have surged in 2026, accounting for more than half of all confirmed hate crimes in New York City as Jewish leaders accuse Mayor Zohran Mamdani of helping inflame the environment with his anti-Israel rhetoric.

NYPD statistics show 425 hate crimes were recorded across the city during the first eight months of 2026, compared with 367 during the same period last year, marking an increase of 15.8%.

More than 200 of those incidents targeted Jews, with anti-Jewish hate crimes rising 8% from last year.

The numbers are particularly stark considering Jewish residents represent only about 10% of New York City’s population.

Yet they accounted for more than half of the city’s confirmed hate crimes.

Jewish Leaders Point to Mamdani’s Anti-Israel Rhetoric

The surge has prompted Jewish leaders to place some of the blame directly on Mamdani, whose outspoken hostility toward Israel has been a defining feature of his political career.

Mamdani has accused Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza and called for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be arrested.
