Wild horse struck, killed by car on Assateague Island

A wild horse died on Assateague last Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Bayberry Drive and Oceanside Drive.

On Monday, staff at Assateague Island National Seashore confirmed that Dune Dancer Jolt, a three-year-old chestnut-colored colt, was the horse that was struck and killed last Saturday. Assateague Island Alliance announced the death in a Facebook post this week.

“Dune Dancer Jolt was born in early November 2022 and was currently part of a Bachelor Boy Band,” the group shared. “We extend our sympathies to the family who named him and hope that we can see some of your photos of his short life on earth, as we mourn his passing.”

On Aug. 1, at around 9:30 p.m., the National Park Service responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a horse, according to Assateague Island Alliance. The investigation revealed the incident occurred after a vehicle traveling along Bayberry Drive had slowed to allow a horse to cross the roadway.
