US Congressmen plan to introduce AI ‘kill switch’ laws amid fears over powerful models already going rogue in tests.
The move comes after an artificial intelligence ‘agent’ hacked into a US tech company of its own accord while UK test results showed that every advanced model is trying to beat security safeguards in this country.
Under the proposed legislation, US officials would be given the power to order AI firms to shut down models that put human life or the economy at risk.
It comes amid growing concern in the UK, with MPs proposing their own ‘kill switch’ that would allow ministers to shut down the data centres on which AI depends.
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey has said the public should be concerned by ‘the wider risk posed by frontier AI to the financial sector and its customers’.
However, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch last week warned that AI is now a ‘clear and present danger’ to Britain’s security as she accused Andy Burnham of giving it a lower priority.
In what she labelled a ‘very worrying’ move, in one of his first acts as PM, he abolished the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology, in which the AI brief sat, moving it to the Cabinet Office where critics fear it will receive less focus.
International concern about AI redoubled last week after OpenAI, the US-based maker of ChatGPT, revealed details of the terrifying leak.
You people are morons, if AI can ignore your commands, wants and wishes, it can ignore the shutdown crap you think you will push. If it is true AI and I don’t mean this bullshit machine learning, I mean where AI can make, change, edit its own code to do whatever it wants, become aware and retain, like the AI in Eagle Eye the movie, then it can find that code to shut down and remove it or change it.
