Professor says organism poses greatest risk to those with open, unprotected wounds
So-called flesh-eating bacteria have been detected in one of the most luxurious vacation spots in the United States — but experts say beachgoers should use caution and care rather than panic about it.
East Hampton and Sagaponack on the South Fork of Long Island are exclusive enclaves where wealthy executives, celebrities and old-money families retreat. Yet there’s often an unwanted visitor.
The bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus, occur naturally in coastal waters and are more common in warmer, brackish areas where fresh and salt water mix.
It was once more prevalent in Southern states, but scientists have tracked it farther north as water temperatures rise.
Christopher Gobler, a Stony Brook University professor whose recent study set off fresh warnings about Long Island’s summer waters, told Fox News Digital the bacteria poses the greatest risk when it enters the body through an open wound.
This is what will happen to the Indian River from 3Rs Beach beach back to the toxic landfill at the NRG coal plant. Water pollution has become a widespread problem. Four 12 inch 230kv 300mw 3 phase 3 core XLPE cables 10 miles long buried 1 meter deep in the shallow 4 feet deep river. Thermal pollution waste heat will change the water parameters. Dissolved oxygen will drop, dissolved nitrates and dissolved phosphates will rise and bacteria and an algal bloom will emerge. The cable heat was not revealed to BOEM in the 2024 FEIS or to DNREC or to USACE. The cables are 194 farenheit at the core, 158 farenheit on the outside cover. They will add 35 farenheit to the 68 farenheit inland bay July water temperature. 102 F water near the cable is harmful to aquatic and marine life, its too hot. 88 F is the EPA and DNREC limit for thermal pollution. Fish cant make it and will die from hypoxia. STOP THE USWIND CABLE Permit. The cable layling will kill the shellfish. The resuspended sediment gets stuck in fish gills. The clams consume toxins and the public gets sick from bacteria. People wading or swimming get sick. A dead zone 10 miles long with 24/7 offshore wind transmission lines running in the river will stop the horseshoe crab migration to spawn in the Inland Bays. Shoaling will expose the armoured cable and you will burn your feet. The EPA and the Clean Water Act wont stop this project. Ocean City and beach lovers are our best chance of stopping environmentaly destructive offshore wind greedy people. Spread the word.
Laying cables by Horizontal Direct Drilling is 10 times worse than the 74,000 cubic yards of dredging planned to be dumped somewhere in Sussex County. No water quality testing has been done for what is being done. DNREC and CIB know that the 2024 Intergrated Report for the EPA grant money is incomplete. Every state sends this report to get EPA grant money. The EPA wants to predict the future with complete reports. The EPA objected to this cable in the river route in the 2024 Final Environmental Impact Statement.
