The Wicomico County Council will begin opening its Legislative meetings with a prayer offered by community
clergy and faith leaders.
Prayer at Legislative meetings will be offered by clergy and faith leaders who represent established religious congregations or organizations serving the Wicomico County community that meet regularly within Wicomico County and are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service. Participation is entirely voluntary, and no member of the County Council, County staff, or the public is required to participate.
Clergy and faith leaders who wish to offer a prayer are invited to participate. Individuals may contact the Council Office or sign up through the Council’s website. Prayer opportunities will be scheduled on a first-come, firstserved basis and will be limited to no more than two minutes.
The Council does not review or direct the content of any prayer. Prayer leaders will be advised that the purpose of the prayer is to solemnize the occasion and that it should not be used to proselytize, advance, or disparage
any faith, belief, or non-belief.
This practice reflects the Council’s respect for the diverse religious traditions, beliefs, and philosophical viewpoints represented throughout Wicomico County, while providing an opportunity for prayer and reflection at Legislative meetings.
For more information or to sign up to offer a prayer, please visit the Wicomico County Council website or contact the Council Office at 410-548-4696 or lhurley@wicomicocounty.org
