Record Number of Americans Reaching Retirement Age—How Prepared Are Cities?

With a record number of Americans reaching retirement age this year, questions have arisen about whether U.S. cities are prepared for the growing demand on housing, health care, transportation, and local finances. For some retirees, those pressures are already shaping life decisions.

The nation entered a historical retirement surge in 2024, with more than 4.1 million Americans turning 65, the traditional retirement age, according to research from the Alliance for Lifetime Income. The report also noted that through 2027, the number of Americans turning 65 each year will exceed 4.1 million.

A recent analysis from StorageCafe examined the 108 most populous metropolitan areas across the country, using various metrics, including healthcare access, safety, housing options, transportation, and community vibrancy.

Doug Ressler, business intelligence manager at Yardi Matrix, parent company of StorageCafe, told The Epoch Times that some cities are better prepared than others when it comes to handling the influx of new retirees and meeting the demands of infrastructure, inflation, and health care.

“By 2034, adults 65 and older will outnumber children, and that will have an effect on city finances, labor markets, and healthcare demand,” he said.

“Our top 10 list of the best locations for 2026 retirees represents those regions that are already ahead of the curve when it comes to the aging population.”

  1. Another Question, who’s going to actually do the work (manual labor) with record numbers of Americans reaching retirement age. If it doesn’t have a keypad the younger generations want nothing to do with it. Is this why we have all this planned immigration? To protect the millennials and other young generations from actually working for a living?
