Meta signs 3 deals for nuclear energy to power AI data centers January 9, 2026 / 1:27 PM EST / AP CBS News (Article and Response)
Article Responding To:
Meta has cut a trio of deals to power its artificial intelligence data centers, securing enough energy to light up the equivalent of about 5 million homes.
The parent company of Facebook on Friday announced agreements with TerraPower, Oklo and Vistra for nuclear power for its Prometheus AI data center that is being built in New Albany, Ohio. Meta announced Prometheus, which will be a 1-gigawatt cluster spanning across multiple data center buildings, in July. It’s anticipated to come online this year.
Financial terms of the deals with TerraPower, Oklo and Vistra were not disclosed.
The Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta said in a statement on Friday that the three deals will support up to 6.6 gigawatts of new and existing clean energy by 2035. A single gigawatt, according to a general industry standard for utilities, can power about 750,000 homes.
“These projects add reliable and firm power to the grid, reinforce America’s nuclear supply chain, and support new and existing jobs to build and operate American power plants,” the company said.
Meta said its agreement with TerraPower will provide funding that supports the development of two new Natrium units capable of generating up to 690 megawatts of firm power with delivery as early as 2032. The deal also provides Meta with rights for energy from up to six other Natrium units capable of producing 2.1 gigawatts and targeted for delivery by 2035.
Meta will also buy more than 2.1 gigawatts of energy from two operating Vistra nuclear power plants in Ohio, in addition to the energy from expansions at the two Ohio plants and a third Vistra plant, Beaver Valley, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The deal with Oklo, which counts OpenAI’s Sam Altman as one of its largest investors, will help to develop a 1.2 gigawatt power campus in Pike County, Ohio, to support Meta’s data centers in the region.
The nuclear power agreements come after Meta announced in June that it reached a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy to secure power from its nuclear plant in Clinton, Illinois.
Response:
The push since 2000 to move from “Traditional Energy’ to “Renewables” wind & solar has led to the “Retiring” of 780 coal power units, individual generators capable of producing energy, have retired, according to The New York Times. Energy nonprofit organization Resources for the Future estimated in 2017 that around 816 natural gas units and 791 petroleum-fired units had retired since 2005.  With the plan to replace all of that with windmills and solar panels.
In Maryland with heavy regulations on energy providers that have led to power plants like Brandon Shores Closing down.
The heavy investments in Wind and Solar projects, and the “War” on “traditional energy” with the regulations have led to energy rates up 1000 percent around the State since January of 2023.
Solutions proposed in Annapolis by Republican Lawmakers like Senator Hershey, and the Maryland Freedom Caucus with a 4 Point Plan to lower energy rates in Maryland have been met with deaf ears by the Moore Administration and the Democrats in Annapolis.
The Maryland Freedom Caucus has formed an alliance with other States in the region, to form a plan to address Maryland’s “energy crisis”..
In addition Calvert Cliffs hand announced it wants to expand its “Nuclear Capabilities”.
The Moore Administration’s  response has been to invest more in “Green Energy”, token rebate checks, a “Study” on Climate Change,  and an Executive Order that was more “lip service” than Action.
With AI and Data Centers on the horizon, most energy experts are saying nuclear is what is going to be needed. That Wind and Solar alone isn’t going to get it done. If Maryland’s energy issues aren’t resolved soon, the State could soon face “Rolling Blackouts” along with even higher energy rates….
The Bottom line from all of this on energy throughout the Country and the State of Maryland, is that businesses and working families need relief on their energy bills. What will work is traditional energy with renewables helping support that, what definitely will not work is renewables Wind / Solar alone…. This step META has taken with nuclear for their data centers is a step in the right direction.
In addition to the United States “Expansion” on the oil in Venezuela,  where the plan is for the US to sell the oil “indefinitely”….
After the 2024 election in November 2024, a 10 point plan was released on what the Trump Administration needs to do on energy policy. Bottom line The Country & especially Maryland needs a “Course Correction” on its energy policies.

  1. unfortunately for some of us marylanders nothing will change until the DemonicRats in charge are subdued by the low iq people who vote for them, When enough of them suffer and demand a change then things will change. Why are my tax dollars subsidizing those who will not work and take care of themselves? why do hard working marylanders have to pay twice? We pay our bill and then have to pay the bills for those who vote for these demonic politicians! enough is enough!
l call out mautz, carozza, adams, sample hughes, anderton, hutchinson, hartman. Stop liining your pockets and help those you are supposed to represent, keep something in their pockets! How much is enough for you bastards? Is there ever enough? a pox on all of you!
