Meehan criticizes AG over involvement in federal lawsuit against Trump order

Ocean City’s mayor fired back at state leaders last week for their involvement in a federal lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s order to freeze approvals for offshore wind projects.

In May, a coalition of 18 attorneys general, including Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown, filed a lawsuit challenging the administration’s decision to halt indefinitely all permitting and approvals for offshore and onshore wind energy projects pending federal review. And last week, a federal judge in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts vacated those actions, declaring them to be arbitrary and contrary to law.

State leaders, including Brown and Gov. Wes Moore, have declared the ruling a victory, arguing Trump’s actions harmed Maryland citizens and local efforts to meet increasing electricity demand through renewable energy sources.

However, in a statement issued last week, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan said the court’s decision had no impact on the Maryland offshore wind project led by US Wind.

“Although we are disappointed with the ruling by the US District Court of Massachusetts on President Trump’s order to stop new permits and approvals for offshore wind projects, the ruling does not impact the US Wind Project because that project already had Federal Approval,” he said. “In fact, we question why Attorney General Anthony Brown felt the need to spend Maryland taxpayer dollars on this lawsuit at all.”

Brown, in a statement last week, called the ruling “a win for Maryland families struggling to afford their utility bills and for the workers paid to build our State’s renewable energy infrastructure.” He added the lawsuit also provided safeguards to wind energy development, leading to lower utility costs and a safer environment.

Brown’s sentiments were shared by Moore last week. The governor also recognized the attorney general’s efforts in “defending our people, our economy and our Constitution.”

“Lowering energy costs requires investing in solutions that work, and expanding clean, reliable wind power is one of the most effective tools we have,” he said. “At a time when too many households are stretched thin by rising utility bills, Maryland is moving forward by cutting red tape and advancing the infrastructure that strengthens our economy.”

What would you expect from the failed LtGov/GovCandidate “Brown, who is running for governor, took the lead on implementing health care reform in Maryland. Now, as the state’s health care exchange remains challenged more than two months after its launch, Brown is faced with questions about whether the exchange is a lemon.”

    1. Trump just turned the tables and designated the wind mill projects as a National Security concern.

Good luck trying to sue now.
