New York Governor Kathy Hochul has formally endorsed socialist Zohran Mamdani as Mayor of New York City.
With less than two months until the election, Hochul penned an endorsement for the Democratic candidate in The New York Times on Sunday.
She revealed she had spoken with Mamdani about policies and his controversial opinions, including surrounding antisemitism and the defund the police movement he once supported.
‘We’ve had our disagreements. But in our conversations, I heard a leader who shares my commitment to a New York where children can grow up safe in their neighborhoods and where opportunity is within reach for every family,’ Hochul wrote.
Hochul’s endorsement coincides with a defiant message from the office of mayor Eric Adams denying ‘complete bulls**t’ emerging online suggesting he was prepared to drop out of the race this week.
She said despite the ‘frank conversations’, she has come to see Mamdani as a leader who shares her values, leading with making New York City more affordable.
Hochul expressed in her endorsement that she was eager to support a candidate who would stand firm against orders from President Donald Trump and Washington in the best interests of New Yorkers.
‘In light of the abhorrent and destructive policies coming out of Washington every day, I needed to know the next mayor would not be someone who would surrender one inch to Donald Trump,’ she wrote.
