Wicomico County is proud to announce the opening of UMES’ FAA Part 147 Certified Aviation Maintenance Technician School at the Salisbury-Ocean City: Wicomico Regional Airport (SBY). The school has been a collaborative effort and partnership between Wicomico County, the State of Maryland, Piedmont Airlines and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
The school opened on August 25, 2025 with an initial cohort of fifteen students. Upon the completion of the twelve-month program, students are eligible to sit for the Airframe and Power Plant examination. Successful completion of the exams allows the student to obtain A&P Certification, a highly valued and respected credential in the aviation and aeronautics industry.
Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano said “I’d like to thank all of our partners for this achievement. This investment in workforce development helps create great jobs in our community, grow the aviation and aeronautical sector for a more diverse and sustainable economy, offer a pathway to meaningful employment opportunities and plan for future development at SBY, a key economic engine for our region.”
To celebrate the partnership and opening of the school, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 from 11 am – 1 pm at SBY (5443 Airport Terminal Road, Salisbury, Maryland 21804).
A brief ceremony will begin at 11:20 am with the ribbon-cutting at 11:55 am.
I’d prefer to see the pilots program for UMES at the Wicomico County airport!!
And while you are at it please take SBY, Salisbury and Ocean City off the title of the airport! The offer absolutely nothing to the airport!
If the name is changed to Wicomico County Airport nobody from off the shore would know how to pronounce it. Most “foreigners” would say Wee-co-mee-co or some other strange word.
this local airport is a joke, want to get somewhere drive to bwi! I remember a time when they actually had two airlines serving it. and no a charter outfit is not another airline!
