Blue States Try To Stop Trump Admin From Investigating Food Stamp Fraud

A coalition of Democratic attorneys general is waging a court battle to prevent the Trump administration from obtaining food stamp data on millions of recipients, arguing the move is an attack on migrants.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, joined by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and 19 other prosecutors, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Monday to block the Department of Agriculture (USDA) from obtaining personal information on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients, according to court documents. The filing marks the latest litigation by Democrats opposed to the Trump administration’s agenda.

“Attorney General James and the coalition argue that this highly sensitive data, which includes home addresses, Social Security numbers, recent locations, immigration statuses, and more, will likely be shared across federal agencies and used for immigration enforcement, in violation of the law,” stated a press release from James’ office.

“Attorney General James and the coalition are seeking a court judgment declaring the administration’s new policy illegal and preventing enforcement,” the statement continued.
