SUN: MD senator sponsoring reckless driving bill ticketed for using phone while driving

A Maryland state senator sponsoring a bill to toughen reckless driving charges was cited over the weekend for using a cell phone while driving, according to court records.

Maryland State Police ticketed Sen. Mary Beth Carozza on Saturday on Route 50 near Keyser Point Road, just a few miles away from her Ocean City condo, according to court records.

“I made a mistake and regret it,” Carozza, 64, said. The Eastern Shore Republican said she has already paid the $83 citation.

Carozza was elected to the state Senate in 2018 after serving a term in the House of Delegates. She is sponsoring a bill that would require people charged with reckless or negligent driving to appear in court if the driving results in death.
