Letter To The Editor

I’m listening to the fire in Mardela Springs that is linked below!

I’m listening to one of the firemen barking orders on the 800 MHz radios that the taxpayers funded with hard earned tax dollars! Don’t know exactly who is barking orders but he told someone to “spray the F**k out of it!” I think the violator is very unprofessional and should be called out on it because they are a liability to Wicomico County! The first volunteer fire officer on the scene was Deputy Chief 9, I believe, from the Mardela Springs Volunteer Fire Department and he took “Command!” That means he is the one responsible for the fire radios!

Then he came back and said “spray the H**L out of it. I thought maybe he knew he messed up but he came back and said “drench the F**k out of it!”

Now he just came back and said “spray the H**L out of it” again!!

Now he said “spray the sh*t out of it!” I just looked it up and it’s a serious FCC violation using “Obscene or profane language” on the radio! I’m very disappointed that none of the volunteer chief officers spoke up! I’m also disappointed that none of the Wicomico County dispatchers or Wicomico County Dispatcher Supervisors spoke up, nor did the Wicomico County System Administrator who gets paid big bucks to monitor the radios in Wicomico County! They will all say they didn’t hear it. The good thing is that Wiconico County 911 tapes the radio transmission and saves them for 30 or 90 days.

Using the F Bomb was always a serious FCC violation! If anything it is a serious violation of Firefighter Professionalism and an embarrassment to Wicomico County and the volunteer fire service! I’m not sure what the Standards are today but at one time you couldn’t use that kind of language on the air or the FCC would come down with some heavy penalties including taking your radios away from you. Those radios FCC license fall under the Wicomico County Government and those paid/volunteer firemen are a liability to to county the way they are talking on it! Let’s see if the elected Wicomico County Executive has the courage to do anything about it or is she too busy Hob Knobbing with the General Assembly in Annapolis at the County taxpayers expense! Yes, The General Assembly is in Session again and our Fearless Leader is spending the next 90 days in Annapolis at our expense for the 3rd year in a row! These are serious Federal violations and Ms. Julie needs to do her job! There needs to be more oversight of the fire service by the County Executive’s Office and the County Council. The County Council needs to work on legislation making this Oversight a reality! They need to wake up because the volunteer fire service is a liability and the County Executive and County Council can be held liable!

  1. So, the FCC should discipline the deputy chief for using strong language? Maybe OSHA should forbid the firefighters from approaching the flames closer than a half mile because, you know, the fire is hot and dangerous and one of the firefighters might get their hair singed or even fall and break a leg.

    PFFFFFFT!

  2. Really? They are fighting a serious fire! They had more to worry about than how someone said something. If that is all your worried about, than your the one with a problem. Get a life “Karen”

  3. Well said…………….and very true. Those radios aren’t the place for their filthy language. No class at all! A disgrace to Wicomico County.

  4. Turn your scanner off Nosey Nora if you don’t like what you’re hearing. The firemen use these “offensive words to you” to stress and convey the importance of their commands. If that hurts your delicate ears be glad you are not around me when I receive a call from a telemarketer !!

  5. A good ole boy who crawls out of a warm bed to save limb and structure for free that got caught up in the heat of the moment.
Looks as if someone has some real sour grapes in there mouth.
I hope the gentleman is awarded to a high merit.
I am sure you have never stood a post or been in a war zone situation and heard radio transmission during engagement. It is not for the weak!

  6. Not one firefighter called him out for cursing during a very stressfull situation?! Good thing we have people like yourself sitting at home in comfort listening to the radio to find something to whine about!

  7. I was there. Deputy 9 was not there at any point. While use of offensive language could be considered unprofessional when you’re in the heat of the moment occasionally it slips out. When we work occasionally our mics get keyed up creating a condition called “open mic” perhaps you what you heard was not ment to be transmitted. As I recall we were all cussing up a storm.
The radio communications, while being able to be heard by the public, are not for the public. It’s not a radio show for entertainment. Perhaps all communications should be encrypted so the public isn’t subjected to any offensive language.
Next time you stub your toe keep your language clean.

  8. Deputy 9 was never there at any point. Sounds like someone has an axe to grind with the County Executive.
While the radios can be heard by the public they are not for the public. Perhaps all of the radios should be encrypted so no one is subjected to foul language. It can be considered unprofessional but on the occasion it slips out in the heat of the moment.
Do you write a letter every time someone cusses on TV? Instead of listening how about you get up and lend a hand.

  9. I was there. Deputy 9 was never there at any time.
It can be considered unprofessional to use cuss words on the radio, however, on the occasion they slip out in the heat of the moment.
The radio traffic can be heard by the public but it is not for the public. Perhaps all of the radios should be encrypted so the public isn’t subjected to harsh language. Instead of listening how about you get up and help out.
Sounds like someone has an axe to grind with the County Executive.
