Former President Donald Trump teased the prospect of ending the income tax through the use of tariffs this week.
As part of a Fox News segment, Trump reminded his audience that the U.S. previously used tariffs as one of its main sources of revenue and that income taxes were a relatively recent development in U.S. history.
“There is a way, if what I’m planning comes out,” he said, the New York Times reported.
Such a development would be highly unlikely, however.
Previously taboo among Republicans, tariffs have gained increasingly popularity in the Trump era as the party gains ground with blue collar workers and looks to bolster domestic production.
There is a system called The Fair Tax. It is a national sales tax on new items. When you spend money, you pay the tax. Used items. No tax. Replaces income tax.
