Biggest hospital bankruptcy in decades affects 2.2 million patients across eight states

Steward Health Care has put all 31 of its hospitals up for sale, after filing for bankruptcy on Monday.

The largest private hospital chain in the US hopes to finalize all transactions by the end of the summer to address $9 billion in debt, its attorneys said at a Tuesday court hearing in Texas.

Steward, which runs hospitals in eight states, hopes to keep all hospitals open in the long term, attorney Ray Schrock said.

‘Our goal remains that there are zero hospitals closed on our watch,’ he said. ‘There’s going to be a change in ownership in many hospitals, we recognize that. But we don’t want to see any of these communities fail to be served.’

Steward filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Houston, Texas, on Monday after months of financial instability.

  1. Steward Health Care’s income is quite enough to sustain their business. The problem is millions and millions of dollars being directed in the wrong places, such as extravagant vacations for executives and buying yachts.

  2. They have a monopoly on healthcare on the whole eastern shore now. They charge what they want and the care has gone to the dogs. They send old people on their way long before they are ready to be discharged. They just want them to die off so they won’t be bothered with them anymore. I personally know of older patients who are shoved out the door and sent to Encompass for rehab when they can barely move, much less do physical therapy. They gotten entirely too big for their britches and the poor care reflects that.

    1. 8:10………You are 100% right! The care is very poor now. They act like they don’t care and don’t want to be there in the first place…………..well, neither do the patients.
