Ocean City officials voice support for statewide exhibition driving law

Ocean City representatives visited Annapolis last week to testify in support of a statewide bill that addresses street racing and exhibition driving.

Last week, members of the Judicial Proceedings and the Environmental and Transportation committees heard testimony on the cross-filed Senate Bill 442 and House Bill 601. During the hearing, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan urged lawmakers to implement statewide legislation similar to a law enacted the resort in recent years.

“I want to tell you that this made a difference, and I think a statewide bill … will make a difference,” he said. “Because what we saw happening in Ocean City, you are now seeing happen on random occasions throughout the entire state. This legislation will help deter that from happening, just like it did in Ocean City.”

As proposed, the legislation would include establishing penalties and points assessments for violations related to speed racing, prohibiting a person from engaging in exhibition driving on any highway or private property used for driving by the public, and establishing certain affirmative defenses to a charge of exhibition driving.

Exhibition driving refers to methods of irresponsible driving, such as performing wheelies, spinning tires, cutting circles, and the like.

  1. I tell you what Ocean City, stay in your lane, and let other county’s handle they’re own business. Plus you need to follow the recycling mandate the rest of the countys and towns do. So you ramble in there like high and mighty OC, and start making rules for the rest of us. You better get your summer crime under control, before trying to set rules for others. Country bumkins all.
