Spending concerns expressed
This week, the 2024 session of the Maryland General Assembly saw Gov. Wes Moore’s (D) State of the State address and had lawmakers prioritize Eastern Shore needs.
Focus on public safety
In the governor’s speech, he maintained that public safety is the administration’s top priority, but some representatives are concerned about a lack of action.
“Moore put forth an ambitious plan for Maryland,” Del. Wayne Hartman (R-38C) said. “There are so many ideas, but how they will go about it is missing. Where do we find compromise on crime legislation?”
Sens. Mary Beth Carozza (R-38C), Ron Watson (D-23), and Chris West (R-42) are committed to their bipartisan public safety bills.
Senate Bill 326, for example, was heard on Feb. 13. The legislation would allow law enforcement to interrogate minors, given probable cause exists that the child committed a violent crime involving a firearm and the officers made a reasonable effort to contact the parents or guardians.
Spending plan woes
Carozza expressed concerns with Moore’s proposed $63 billion spending plan. While it does not raise taxes, she worries that the Climate Pollution Reduction Plan and the $3.8 billion annual Blueprint for Maryland’s Future education plan will hurt Eastern Shore priorities.
