Governor’s budget would cut $1.5M from Wor-Wic

Worcester commissioners issue letter with concerns

A budget change proposed by the governor could result in a $1.5 million funding cut to Wor-Wic Community College.

The Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Reconciliation and Financing Act proposed by Gov. Wes Moore (D) includes cuts to community college funding throughout the state. Locally, Wor-Wic could see a cut of $1.5 million. The Worcester County Commissioners this week agreed to send state officials a letter expressing their concern with the proposed change.

According to county staff, the governor’s proposal would adjust the Cade funding formula, which was established in the 1990s to provide community colleges with predictable support for operations. Chief Administrative Officer Weston Young said the state had the ability to pass a new funding formula that would re-base the calculation.

“They can choose not to fund a formula they’ve previously committed to funding,” he said.

Young pointed out the change was proposed despite the fact that the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future included a college and career readiness component that encouraged students to pursue associate degrees while they were still in high school.

“In short, a cut to Wor-Wic is counterproductive to the state’s educational reform efforts,” he said.

  1. Governor Moore has spent all the money and then some. Cutting funding for WorWic is only the beginning, as there will be cuts and tax increases because of the irresponsible spending of this Democrat Administration.

  2. When Hogan left office MD had a surplus. Now all of a sudden under this POS Moore the state has a deficit. Democrats ruin anything and everything they touch.

  3. The governor is keeping his campaign promises. His promise to re-instate all funding for the Baltimore Purple Line. This will get 1600 people from the east side of Baltimore to the west side. Billions for the unions and 0 for the working class.
