If face masks really stop Covid, then why are so many of us still catching it?

Stifling. Itchy. Dehumanising. Oppressive. Profoundly un-British. Just some of the terms used to describe the experience of mask-wearing.

Despite the discomfort, we put up with it for the health of our nation and, so we’re told, to do what we can to bring this nightmare to an end, as soon as possible.

And last week, London Mayor Sadiq Khan argued that we should extend the annoyance to outdoors – on our high streets – to protect our fellow Christmasshoppers.

But is all this face-mask-wearing helping? Surveys show that three-quarters of Britons are wearing masks in mandatory areas – public transport, offices, pubs and restaurants when not sitting at a table, and most indoor spaces.

Yet the infection is still spreading at a rate that requires 38 million Britons to be banned from mixing indoors with anyone outside of their household.

Last week, cases increased in every area of England bar Yorkshire and the Humber, and in some areas the infection rate leapt up to twice what it was in April.

So are they useless, after all? If Mr Khan’s logic is to be believed, perhaps the problem is that we aren’t wearing them outdoors – surrounded by crowds of people. But studies show that just one in 100 cases is transmitted outside.

  1. “So many of us” is but a tiny fraction of the population. Death numbers are highly inflated. Normal epidemiologic reports don’t show closeups of clusters; numbers of positive and death reports are by county, at best, not even giving the data necessary to put emphasis on control of hot spots.
    We are being had.

  2. That’s because it is NOT being spread publically. It’s being spread from private parties when selfish idiots choose to be ignorant and ignore the common sense of “If you feel sick, don’t go out”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those who scream you gotta shut down the nation to get rid of this crap. But also, you must use common sense also. I mean, even BEFORE all this, if I had a cold and I was invited to a friends house for dinner/drinks/whatever. I would say no, even if I did think I felt ok. I wouldn’t go out of common courtesy for the health of others! My mother is now on hospice because she was exposed during Thanksgiving. My sister has been her caregiver for years. She, her husband and my mother went to his mother’s house for Thanksgiving Dinner. His sister and her husband showed up both sick as dogs and infected EVERYONE who was in attendance. The sister and husband say COVID-19 is a hoax and refused to be tested. Everyone who was exposed has tested positive except for said sister and husband but of course they still refused to be tested. Oh and they just left to go to Orlando last week also. No COVID-19 isn’t going to be the cause of death, my mother smoked for greater than 60 years and thus had extreme COPD and has severe alzheimer’s. However, getting the COVID-19 certainly decreased her lifespan. What I am saying with this rant, is to use common sense folks! If you are sick, STAY HOME! Just like the good ole days!

  3. Ask those that have HAD IT feel being HAD or better yet those dead. The people complaining about masks get along quite well with false teeth or no teeth at all and a mask is some big deal and infringement on their rights. Stay the hell home STFU.
