Salisbury Maryland, The Gift That Just Keeps On Giving

I believe around 20 years ago I found this building for sale, (Union Station) in much better shape. It was listed for $100,000.00 and I offered full price and even went up to $130,000.00 in $5,000.00 increments to guarantee the purchase. Days went by and I hadn’t received a reply from the selling agent. Mind you, the building sat for over a year at that price and no sale happened.

Then I got a call tipping me off that the then Mayor Barrie Tilghman found out that Joe Albero had made an offer and all of a sudden the Knorr Brothers had somehow out bid me by $2,000.00, GO FIGURE! Mr. Hanna was the listing agent and leave it to the good ol’ boys I lost out on the purchase.

Now keep all that in mind, especially the sale price. Now your current Mayor wants to award the owners with $250,000.00 worth of improvements just to fix the roof and structural stuff because it had been abandoned for close to two decades. Your tax dollars at work.

Keep in mind, there’s more to this story. The former Mayor assured the Knorr Brothers they could get everything they wanted/needed to open EVO Brewing Company there, not true. Instead, Tilghman hit them with a massive water/sewer hook up fee that forced the Knorr’s to move to Delmar Delaware, hence why this building sat for close to two decades.

To add to the grant money, when I ran for Mayor I proposed the idea that a bike trail could be created from the University to Downtown by simply partnering with the railroad tracks on Rt. 13. Interesting how that too is now being proposed over a decade later.

Yeah, it certainly was your election to lose. Salisbury is still crooked as hell.

  1. Most certainly it is always the good old boys club. The connection is builders, realtors, bankers. This is why the first time home owners can’t find homes to buy and people looking to buy building to run a business can’t find anything. It’s the same old people they have a handle on good buys. It’s all corrupt. If your not in the click your not getting anything that’s a deal.

    1. Keep in mid, this wasn’t that great a “deal” some 20 years ago. It was a fair price and I offered full asking price, (and more) cash with no contingencies.

  2. It’s been that way forever. 60 years ago I had an offer to buy some property in the city at a good price. I applied to the bank for a loan and immediately it was purchased by the brother in law of a bank director.who “heard” it was for sale.

  3. The worst part is that there are actually people who believe Salisbury is a great place. It’s crap like this, the insanity of the school system, and the urban blight that all contribute to the small mind mentality and their hold on power. As far as I can recall, I don’t believe that I have ever heard anyone speak about Salisbury with any sort of pride. It’s a pathetic, crime ridden and run down hole in the ground.

    1. Lights Needed at : Snow Hill Rd & Johnson Rd Corner / Tilghman Rd Corner / Beaglin Park &
Mt Herman Rd Corner / Long OverDue

    1. Yup, the proposed homeless village is supposed to be located at Ann street, right around the corner .
I work just a block or so away, so it is definitely ghetto !

  4. Knock it down it clashes with all the nice strip malls, big box stores, and fast food joints we so desperately longed for.

  5. I didn’t vote for Jake either time and we had Barrie Tilghman who did a good job, and Ireton did a good job both cared about the city and the people. It has looked more like a dump every day since Jake Day got it. The city inspectors don’t see anything I have notified them in person and in writing twice about two in the Salvation Army
neighborhood and nothing has been done .The one next to St. Andrews Church the one side has fallen on the ground and this week there are men out there paining it but not fixing anything first. Like lipstick on a pig they can’t see the most obvious. The other house sits on the corner of Jackson & Lincoln Ave and is a dump for abandoned vehicles and everything else an old junker would love it sell it all for scrap. This town is crappier than the Bronx in New York. My suggestion is next time vote for a real mayor with a background that includes a JOB!!!!!

    1. She did a great job lining her pockets. You have to be kidding, Ireton turned Salisbury into Rehobeth and Jake kept it going. Where the new firehouse is, who benefited from the sale? The problem with ALL politicians, check all the family and see who is making out. She pushed Dykes out so she could get what away with what ever she wanted. Look at the sewer system that was NEVER resolved and money lost. She did a good job, are you serious? She was the beginning of Salisbury turning to shit, she hired Webster who was a joke. We haven’t had a good mayor since Martin. Speaking of making money, look who made money when they decided to put bypass in. Politicians only care about themselves, NOT the town anymore. Audit them and their family and you will see this. Audit the council members and see who is making deals behind the scenes. She did a good job, why because she was a female? Ireton was great why because he was gay? Start electing people that are qualified not because of race, sex, or orientation. Elect because they want to make better not line their pockets.

  6. The demographics have gotten past the point of no return, Salisbury will never be a safe place for people to congregate so all these little projects like bike trail’s won’t be used except by homeless and illegal dirt bikes . I cannot wait to move out of here finally

  7. tilgman and ireton did a good job? wtf are you smoking? I’ve dealt with too many in this so called government of thieves over the years. They are all corrupt as hell. Most of the citizens have no idea why things are the way they are. All those commisions airport housing zoo zoning. Well they are the ones fleecing the taxpayers for their own benefit along with the slumlords and their buddies in and out of government.
Remember if you cant identify the sucker at the table then it’s most likely you!
all for a dollar? Greedy bastards!

  8. Sketchy neighborhood when you made your offer; still a rough area today.
Unsuspecting patrons will be sheep delivered to the wolves.
With roundabouts positioned to each compass point around the old building it should be a mecca to the throngs of local and tourist cyclists and scooter operators clogging city streets.
Perhaps the burgeoning renaissance will generate enough revenue to properly pave Middleneck aka Jake Chi Minh Trail for its terrible condition.

  9. Bags of SUPER cheap, unable to light charcoal going out to:

    – Jakie
    – Snow Hill Worcester Co Commishes
    – Berlin Board
    – Ocean Pines Board
    – Ocean City Fail
    – Larry on the Corner

  10. Not much has changed since the Park and Ride lot scam. Get the taxpayers to fund it, let the politician’s get rich participating in the money shuffle and create another sports complex that can’t be justified. How many years now have the OC Town not funded transportation to/from the P&R lot? They just can’t agree what to spend the taxpayer money on that they want to split the LOOT on (again!).

  11. “The grant was awarded through the State’s Strategic Demolition Fund, a program designed to catalyze projects and activities that accelerate job production and economic development”
Can’t find anything on State webpage that details requirements for private entity (Knorr Brothers / EVO) to repay the program should they decided to sell the property 1, 2, 3… years after?
This is a REAL gift from the State (i.e. tax-payers) to improve a landlords property, so don’t shoot the messenger.

  12. Your never gonna get past the good Ole boys in bury it’s always been that way its all in the wash it ain’t gonna be long before they rename it Baltimore 2 they have there first highrise look out here it comes totaly trashed
