Defense bill includes ‘robust’ shipbuilding budget, still needs approval from Senate

A national defense bill is closer to being approved after passing the House earlier this week, but it still needs to be approved by the Senate.

A vote is expected Thursday or Friday.

President Donald Trump has threatened to veto the bill, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell urged its passage Thursday.

News 3 spoke with Senator Tim Kaine, who serves on the Armed Services Committee, about how the bill would impact Hampton Roads if approved.

Sen. Kaine says the bill includes, “a very robust shipbuilding and ship repair budget, including continued work on a brand new class of submarines at the Huntington Ingalls Shipyard in Newport News.”

Sen. Kaine says the bill will also help with unemployment among military spouses and improve military housing on base.
