Missouri Moves to Require Libraries Shield Minors From Books and Materials That Are Not Age-Appropriate

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft has proposed a rule to force state-funded libraries to shield minors from books and materials that are not age-appropriate.

Under the proposed rule , libraries will also not be allowed to host or advertise events that are inappropriate for children, like drag queen story hours.

Additionally, state funds could not be used to “purchase or acquire inappropriate materials in any form that appeal to the prurient interest of a minor.”

Libraries also would be required to “honor a parent’s decision as to what material their child has access to in the library.” Parents will have the right to challenge a library’s age-appropriate designation for any material.

  1. Libraries are a waste of money unless you are so poor you need to use the computers there. Librarians are not babysitters. Books are obsolete you can you can control your child’s literary and social media intake on devices that they prefer anyway. I know we all have nostalgic notions about them at one time but they are just dumps now full of homeless people passed out or with needles in their arms in the bathrooms. Drag Clowns are the least of Library Malaise. Most librarians I have encountered are the least read people I ever met. They know the Title of Everything and the Content of NOTHING hanging on the Municipal Teet.

  2. I went to the Wicomico County Library on Friday. First time in a long time. Last time too. Very scary – out front 2 people screaming at each other on the sidewalk, a man smoking at the front door. Inside was just as bad. Will NOT be taking my grandkids there.

    1. I had that same experience a couple of weeks ago. The branch out at the mall is much nicer, smaller but nicer. One of the ladies there helped me get the ebooks from the library on my Kindle. Maybe try that branch.
