Li-Cycle’s Alabama facility begins commercial operations

Lithium-ion battery processor Li-Cycle brought its Alabama location on-line, giving the company an additional capacity of 10,000 tons per year.

Located in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the facility is more than 100,000 square feet in size and possesses 120,000 square feet of warehousing capacity, a press release stated.

Across its four operating “Spoke” facilities in North America, Li-Cycle has 30,000 annual tons of processing capacity. By the end of 2023, the company plans to have an annual capacity of 65,000 tons in North America and Europe.

The Tuscaloosa facility uses Li-Cycle’s patented technology to process full EV battery packs without dismantling. The company chose Alabama because of its proximity to auto manufacturers, according to the press release.

The “Hub” facility, which will process the black mass created by the “Spoke” facilities, is under construction in Rochester, N.Y. and will come on-line in 2023, the press release stated.

Ajay Kochhar, co-founder and CEO of Li-Cycle, said in the press release that the Alabama facility “enhances our ability to support the recycling needs of our diverse and growing customer base in North America to ensure lithium-ion battery material is recycled in an environmentally friendly and safe manner.”

“Li-Cycle is creating an essential domestic supply of recycled material to support EV production and assist automakers in meeting their domestic production content requirements,” Kochhar added.

  1. The green weenies don’t know that to make an electric car…so called greenhouse emissions are MORE to make the electric car than a regular car with gasoline engine emits in it’s lifetime. Also, if a glass of water represents “greenhouse emissions”, what man is responsible for is the equivalent of one drop. The so called elite are making a fortune over “climate change”…
