Journalists Plug Ford Electric Truck in at Campground, Find Out It Will Take 5 Days to Fully Charge

Two journalists with TFLEV decided to drive the Ford 150 Lightning EV truck from the lower 48 states to Alaska and learned some of the recharging challenges they would face.

Having made that drive from Pennsylvania to Fairbanks in 2013, I can tell you it certainly required some planning driving a gas-powered SUV, much less an electric truck.

The towns and gas stations once you get north of Whistler, British Columbia, become more and more sparse and when you hit the Yukon Territory, there’s Whitehorse — a nice little city — and not much else to the Alaska border.

Things may have changed in the last nine years, but you really had to be careful about filling up your gas tank when you had the chance.

Making the trip in an EV truck takes a lot more planning.

  1. I see few advantages and huge electric bills to keep it charged at home. I saw this video last night and was shocked to see just how much power it takes to charge up your vehicle. Almost a whole week on a standard 240 volt outlet! No thanks. I understand now why the chairman of Toyota stated that Japan does not have the infrastructure to handle electric vehicles. They are pushing for the more practical hydrogen powered engines. I believe this is the future and not EV powered vehicles. The batteries are not recyclable and cause massive environmental damage from countries that mine lithium. I like my rechargeable lawn and garden tools and my E bike, but have no plans on ever purchasing an EV Truck or Car. At least with my Ebike, if I run out of power, I can still peddle home!

  2. They should have named it Lightening, as in lightening your pocketbook and your ability to drive longer than a few hours at a stretch.

    1. They named it Lightning as a joke, like calling a fat guy “Slim”. Amos & Andy had a character named Lightning. He was the dimmest bulb in the chandelier.
