Ocean City Special Event Zone:

Tuesday, September 20, 2022 – Sunday, September 25, 2022

OCEAN CITY, MD – (September 12, 2022):  In anticipation of the upcoming “Pop-up Rally” event in our resort community next week, Ocean City will be designated a Special Event Zone beginning Tuesday, September 20, 2022, through Sunday, September 25, 2022.

The Special Event Zone reduces established speed limits in the zone and increases fines for violations. The maximum speed limit in Ocean City will be 30 mph. Additionally, legislation signed in 2020 allows for increased penalties for specific motor vehicle violations.  Similar to a Construction Zone, violators will face increased fines or, in some cases, arrest.

During this time frame, citizens should expect to see a significant police presence as officers from multiple allied agencies will be assisting the Ocean City Police Department.  Officers from the Ocean City Police Department, Maryland State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority, Natural Resource Police, Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office, and the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office will strictly enforce all traffic laws. In addition, significant traffic congestion and alternate traffic patterns are anticipated throughout the weekend.

Spectators are urged to keep the sidewalks clear for pedestrian traffic and should not incite the spinning of wheels or “burn-outs” by motorists.  Officers will enforce all laws for spectators who incite drivers and enforce the violations with the driver.  Further, with high pedestrian traffic expected, pedestrians are urged to Walk Smart! and always use crosswalks when crossing roadways. Wait for the signal to change, and be sure drivers see you while crossing.

  1. Wait a minute….there’s something happening the week after Bike Week? Hold on, I don’t see anything on the calendar. Its SUPPOSED to be Sunfest but I just don’t understand. Is something “special” coming?

    Hmmm…

Well one thing is for sure, additional LEOs mean additional funds executed from budget. The City Fail’s self described “PopUp Rally” has scared away vacationers who came during the latter September timeframe. The type of vacationers who spend money because they don’t or no longer have children. City Fail scared those folks away AS well as locals – since most locals hear the words PopUp Rally and decided to spend that time elsewhere. Why is that of concern? They are taking their money elsewhere too.

Didn’t need to be this way but since City Fail would not work with the prior organizer (who has been gone now for what…almost 5 years??), but since City Fail’s action was to hit the troublemakers hard AND publicize the strength of the Police – it added fuel to the fire.

We see that compromise is the American way. When it works, everyone wins. When it doesn’t (like in CONgress and state/local governments) no one wins. The wait year after year and hope they won’t come back – well how has that worked.

Extra money for LEOs, locals exiting for day, hotel rooms not filled and maybe they don’t show – is a wasted weekend for revenue, especially when the weather is warm as well as the water.

Pop-Up Rally – BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA City Fail you are showing your mindset age…..still!

    1. To the commentator at 2:07 p.m.,

Do you live in Ocean City? Have you lived in Ocean City in the last five years?

I do, and NOBODY here wants H2oI and the miscreants that came with it. The only complaint I have is that things weren’t able to be implemented fast enough, and the rampant lawlessness and complete disregard for anyone else was, at best, abhorrent.

To your point about vacationeers being scared away is correct. The folks who came to have a nice weekend at the beach did not come back due to this crowd and the absolute chaos that ensued. To add to that, multiple videos are widely available via social media that serve to underscore the madness that took place. Those combined factors along with outrage from those of us that live here (as well as said outrage right here on this site) were more than enough for visitors to review and decide to go elsewhere.

You are entitled to your opinion, and I do respect that, but finding fault with the city is incorrect. The reason why folks don’t want to visit Ocean City during this timeframe is because of those individuals who came to our town turning it upside down. Law Enforcement did the best it could given the parameters they were under until the legislature put real teeth into the situation. Once there were stiff penalties and consequences in place, the town saw a much greater reduction in crimes and calls for service last year. Regarding the payment of the LEOs (extra shifts/overtime/etc.), of course the law enforcement personnel are paid for their service, and this was budgeted for. I would imagine you do not work for free, and frankly, if you knew what they went through you would likely have a very different opinion of this situation.

As I stated above, you have a right to your opinion, but I personally feel that your comments were written in such a manner as to blame the city, when it is the offenders that created the situation who should be held liable and to blame.

      1. Cmon Pally, been here since the 70s…thats the 1970s, right at the explosion of island building. Ive seen and experienced it all…hence my need for bourbon. We agree we disagree on tbings, thankful for the platform and living in the USA. This particular instance (fear of PopUp Rally) has been exasperated on the lack of compromise with the city group. That was over a decade ago but today many on the isle split when this supposedly awful weekend arrives each year. The city group pours gas on a smoldering ashes each year. They poke the bear and now use legislative force to penalize folks. Time was wasted in Annapolis, funding is wasted yearly for extra LEOs and others..all the while if a compromise many years ago was agreed, we wouldnt be in fake fear as well as spending unnecessary tax dollars. Rickie was around then too. Hard headed mindset as well as now having a useless still summer weekend for revenue is unacceptable.

If a town is going to spend lots of money as well as getting legislative approval for a “special event” situation – then do it from memorial day weekend until the end of Sept. Not just out of fear of kids with low riding cars. Waste fraud abuse comes to mind.

Anyway, i dont need to justify who I am, what I do/done or if i live here. Geez, that kiddie pool fodder. Im heading out fishing shortly, enjoy the weather and ketchup with fellow riders with bourbon this weekend.

        Enjoy yapping, take care.
